Australia has 4x more fatal shark attacks than any other country. The problem is, shark nets don’t form a complete barrier and are dangerous to sea life, while aerial patrols only spot one in eight sharks.
We wanted a new way to keep both our swimmers and sharks safe.
So Optus joined forces with Shark Mitigation Systems to create Clever Buoy. This world-first solution uses sonar technology to detect shark-sized objects in coastal areas and relay a signal, via the Optus Network, to lifeguards on the beach.
After developing a rapid POC prototype, the Clever Buoy is undergoing further R&D with the aim of an extended open water trial over Summer 2016/2017.
